Netherlands American Cemetery Marks Dodenherdenking 2017

Netherlands American Cemetery commemorated Dodenherdenking, a national day of remembrance for the Dutch on May 4. Across the country, citizens observe two minutes of silence to remember both civilians and members of the military who died in war. As a show of solidarity, the cemetery flies the large American and Dutch flags that day. In the evening, local citizens bring their children to the cemetery to observe the moment of silence and assist with the lowering and folding of the flags. This year World War II veteran Lawrence “Larry” A. Michaelis, who was assigned to the 101st Airborne, joined for the event. While World War II may have ended more than 70 years ago, the Dutch have not forgotten.
