Major Williams was a member of the Marine All Weather Attack Squadron 224, Marine Attack Group 14, 1st Marine Air Wing. On May 3, 1972, he was the radar interdiction officer of a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6A) flying over Ron, Quang Binh Province, North Vietnam, when his aircraft was shot down. His remains were recovered on June 21, 1989 and identified on October 19, 1989. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
