Major Wiechert was a member of the 615th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On November 16, 1968, he was the pilot of a North American Super Sabre Fighter (F-100D) on a mission in Khanh Hoa Province, South Vietnam, when his aircraft was shot down in the South China Sea. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
