Private First Class Widener was a member of the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division. On June 11, 1967, he was a passenger in a Boeing Sea Knight Cargo Helicopter (CH-46A) inserting a seven man team about eleven miles northwest of Dong Ha, South Vietnam, when his aircraft was hit by enemy fire and crashed. His remains were recovered on August 5, 2005 and identified on August 22, 2006. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
