Chief Warrant Officer, Third Class Whitmire was a member of Troop B, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On May 1, 1968, he was the pilot of a Hughes Loach Observation Helicopter (OH-6A) on a visual reconnaissance mission over A Shau Valley, South Vietnam when he crashed into a ravine. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
