Sergeant First Class Wentzel was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a member of the 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. He was Killed in Action while defending an outpost against fighting the enemy near Sokkogae, North Korea on November 21, 1951. Although wounded he continued to kill the enemy until he was killed by an enemy grenade.
