Major Walling was a member of the 557th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Cam Ron Ray Air Base, South Vietnam. On August 8, 1966, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4C) on a close support mission over South Vietnam. Shortly after the second bomb run on enemy troops, his aircraft was hit and exploded. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. MAJ Walling's remains have been recovered and identified.
