Sergeant First Class Veenstra was a veteran of World War II, serving as a ranger. In Korea, he was the Field First Sergeant of Company G, 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regimental Combat Team. He was Killed in Action when his jeep ran over an enemy land mine near Masan-Dong, North Korea on November 16, 1950.
