Lieutenant Colonel Van Cleave was a member of the 480th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On April 22, 1969, he was the weapons systems officer of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on a mission over Laos, when his aircraft was shot down. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
