Chief Warrant Officer, Third Class Vanden Eykel was a member of 129th Aviation Company, 268th Aviation Battalion, 17th Aviation Group. On December 2, 1969, he was the aircraft commander of a Bell Huey Utility Helicopter (UH-1B) was on a night ground support mission in Binh Dinh Province, South Vietnam to a long range reconnaissance patrol when his aircraft crashed into a mountain. His remains were recovered on January 23, 1989 and identified on February 22, 1990. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
