Colonel Utley was a member of the 469th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Korat Air Base, Thailand. On January 26, 1969, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4E) on a mission 5 miles southwest of Sepone, Savannakhet Province, Laos, when his aircraft was hit by hostile fire and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
