Major Trier was a member of the 17th Bomber Wing. On December 20, 1965, he was the pilot of a North American Super Sabre Fighter (F-100F) on a mission over Quang Ninh Province, North Vietnam, when his aircraft crashed. His remains were recovered on October 14, 1982 and identified on October 26, 1982. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
