Lieutenant Colonel Tigner was a member of the 421st Tactical Fighter Squadron. On August 22, 1972, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4E) on a combat mission over Quang Tri, Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam. His aircraft was hit by hostile fire severing its right wing and it crashed into the river at Quang Tri. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
