Staff Sergeant Thompson was a member of Company D, 3rd Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. On October 25, 1968, he was on a mission about five miles south of Thuc Giang, Kien Hoa Province, South Vietnam. As he was crossing a stream he lost his balance and was swept away by the current. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
