Staff Sergeant Sykes was a rifleman with Company A, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 196th Infantry Brigade at Chu Lai, South Vietnam. On January 9, 1968, he was attacking the enemy in "Happy Valley", Quang Tin Province, South Vietnam when he was wounded, captured then died in captivity. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
