Major Swanson was a member of the 34th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On June 16, 1967, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a mission over North Vietnam, when his aircraft crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
