Major Sutherland was the pilot of a F-51D Mustang fighter and the Operations Officer of the 165th Fighter Bomber Squadron, 123rd Fighter Bomber Group, stationed at Godman Air Force Base, Kentucky. On April 5, 1951, he was on the northwest taxi strip when he collided with another F-51D traveling in the opposite direction.
