Lieutenant Colonel Stubberfield was a member of the 45th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron. On May 6, 1965, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Voodoo Reconnaissance Fighter (RF-101C) on a reconnaissance of the Demilitarized Zone, when his aircraft was shot down just west of Vinh Linh, North Vietnam. His remains were recovered on December 15, 1988 and identified on June 27, 1989. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
