Captain Stringer was a platoon leader in Company B, 1st Battalion, 11th Infantry Regiment. His unit was operating about 15 miles east northeast of Khe San, Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam. On November 30, 1970, he was crossing a stream when he lost his grip and was swept away by the rapid current. He was declared Missing in Action. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
