Specialist, Sixth Class Strait was a member of Troop C, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On October 18, 1970, he was the observer in a Hughes Loach Observation Helicopter (OH-6A) on a reconnaissance mission 30 miles of Xuan Loc, Binh Tuy Province, South Vietnam when the aircraft was hit by small arms fire, crashed and burned. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
