First Lieutenant Stewart was the pilot of a F-84E Thunderjet fighter with the 523rd Fighter Escort Squadron, 27th Fighter Escort Wing. On April 23, 1951, while on a combat mission, he was returning to base for an emergency landing. His aircraft exploded and he was not able to bail out successfully.
