USNA Class of 1939, Commander Stapler was the pilot of a AD-4Q Skyraider Queen with Carrier Air Group 19, flying with Composite Squadron 35 aboard the carrier USS PRINCETON (CV-37). On June 9, 1951, his aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire and crashed north at CT 7756 north of Kumsong. He was listed as Missing in Action and presumed dead on May 12, 1954. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
