Captain Stanley was a member of the 557th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Can Ranh Bay Air Base, South Vietnam. On April 1, 1967, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4C) on a mission 15 miles northwest of Tam Ky, Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam. when his aircraft was shot down. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
