Major Spencer was a member of the 744th Bomber Squadron, Utapao Air Base, Thailand. On December 20, 1972, he was the radar navigator of a Boeing Stratofortress Bomber (B-52G) on a bombing mission over Hanoi, North Vietnam. After the bombs were released, the aircraft was hit by a surface to air missile and crashed. His remains were recovered on September 30, 1977 and identified on October 25, 1977. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
