Chief Warrant Officer, Second Class Sparks was a member of 48th Aviation Company, 11th Aviation Group. On March 19, 1971, he was the co-pilot of a Bell Huey Utility Helicopter (UH-1C) covering a downed U.S. helicopter on the Laotian border. His helicopter was hit and he made an emergency landing. He was declared Missing in Action. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
