Radioman Second Class Smith was a crew member of the salvage ship, USS GRAPPLE (ARS-7). On the night of August 15, 1952, his ship was on patrol off the Korean coast, looking for enemy sampans laying mines, "flycatcher" Duty. The minesweeper, USS CHIEF (AM-315) accidentally fired two rounds at the USS GRAPPLE, one striking the pilot house, killing two seamen and wounding nine others.
