Staff Sergeant Smith was a former member of the First Communications Maintenance Squadron, Griffiss Air Force Base, Rome, New York. On November 28, 1952 he was enroute to Canisteo, New York from Great Falls, Montana in a C-54 transport when it crashed near McChord Air Force Base, Tacoma, Washington.
