Major Sluder was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was the pilot of a F-80C Shooting Star fighter interceptor and the commanding officer of the 80th Fighter Bomber Squadron, 8th Fighter Bomber Group. On July 3, 1950, while on an armed reconnaissance mission, he saw a column of 90 North Korean armored vehicles approaching American positions near Pangyo-ri, South Korea. While destroying these vehicles, he was attacked by a North Korean aircraft and was shot down.
