Major Sittner was a member of the 557th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On August 23, 1967, he was the bombardier/navigator of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on a mission 5 miles northeast from Tuyen Quang, North Vietnam, when the aircraft crashed. His remains were recovered on June 1, 1992 and identified on November 25, 1997. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
