Airman Second Class Simmons was the tail gunner of a B-26B Invader bomber with the 729th Bomber Squadron, 452nd Bomber Wing. On October 1, 1951, while on an armed reconnaissance in the Wonsan area, his aircraft crashed 25 miles west of Samchok. His remains were recovered.
