CPL Simmons was a taken prisoner by Japanese forces and held at the Cabanatuan POW Camp where he died while in captivity. He was buried in a common grave site at the Cabanatuan Cemetery in a group burial along with other prisoners. Following the war, he and the co-mingled remains of 10 other Unknowns were reinterred in a mass grave at the Manila American Cemetery. In 2014, the remains of these Unknowns were disinterred from the Plot A Row 12 Grave 195 at the Manila American Cemetery. Cpl. Simmons' remains were identified in 2015, and his name is permanently inscribed at the Manila American Cemetery.
