Major Shine was a member of the 355th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On December 2, 1972, he was the pilot of a Vought Corsair II Attack Aircraft (A-7D) on a mission near Barthelemy Pass, North Vietnam, when his plane disappeared through the clouds. His remains were recovered on June 6, 1995 and identified on August 2, 1996. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
