First Lieutenant Sherman was a member of the Marine All Weather Fighter Squadron 235, Marine Attack Group 11, 1st Marine Air Wing. On March 25, 1966, he was the pilot of a Vought Crusader Fighter (F-8E) returning from his bombing mission, when his aircraft crashed about ten miles west of Chu Lai, South Vietnam. His remains were recovered on June 8, 1993 and identified on June 8, 1998. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
