For his leadership and valor, the U.S. Air Force awarded Major Sellers the Silver Star and the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Major Sellers was a member of the Marine Fighter Squadron 115, Marine Air Group 33, 1st Marine Air Wing. He flew over 100 missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Gold Star and the Air Medal with Five Gold Stars. On July 20, 1953, he was an exchange pilot of a F-86F Sabre Jet fighter bomber with the 336th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, 4th Fighter-Interceptor Group. He destroyed two MiG-15s before his aircraft was hit, losing both wings. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on July 20, 1954. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
