Aviation Electronics Technician Second Class Schmid was the radar operator of an AD-4N Skyraider night dive bomber with Detachment F, Composite Squadron 35 aboard the carrier USS KEARSARGE (CV-33). On January 28, 1953, during a night heckler mission, the pilot reported that the aircraft was lost. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on June 14, 1954. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
