Captain Salzarulo was a member of the 557th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On September 4, 1966, he was the bombardier/navigator of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4C) on a mission about 10 miles southwest of Thai Nguyen, Bac Thai Province, North Vietnam, when his aircraft was shot down. His remains were recovered on September 13, 1990 and identified on January 11, 1991. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
