Captain Ryder was a member of the 21st Tactical Air Support Squadron at Pleiku Air Base, South Vietnam. On June 9, 1970, he was the pilot of a Cessna Bird Dog Observation Aircraft (O-1G) on a visual reconnaissance south of Ben Het, South Vietnam, when radio contact was lost. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
