First Lieutenant Russell was a member of the 345th Tactical Airlift Squadron, Tan Son Nhut Air Base, South Vietnam. On April 26, 1972, he was the navigator of a Lockheed Hercules Transport (C-130E) making a night drop of supplies to South Vietnamese troops at An Loc about 65 miles from Saigon. As the aircraft approached the drop zone, it was hit by enemy fire and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
