Warrant Officer, First Class Robertson was a member of Troop B, 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. On February 10, 1971, he was the pilot of a Hughes Cayuse Observation Helicopter on a visual reconnaissance mission in Thua Thien Province, South Vietnam when it was hit by machine gun fire, burst into flames and crashed. His remains were recovered on May 15, 1994 and identified on March 16, 2004. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
