Sergeant Roark was a member of 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. His remains were recovered on May 31, 1968 and identified on November 28, 1977. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. SGT Roark received the Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. On May 16, 1968, SGT Roark distinguished himself by extraordinary gallantry while serving with Company C as the point squad leader of a small force which had the mission of rescuing 11 men on a hilltop observation post under under heavy attack by a company-size force. While under incoming enemy fire, SGT Roark threw himself upon in incoming grenade
