Major Rightmyer was the pilot of a F4U-4B Corsair fighter with the Marine Fighter Squadron 312, Marine Air Group 12 aboard the carrier USS BADOENG STRAIT (CVE-116). On November 27, 1952, he made a low strafing pass at enemy troops in the Monggump'o-ri area of Korea when his engine began to run erratically. He tried to make an emergency landing at Paengyong-do Airfield (K-53). His plane nosed over in the shallow water and burst into flames.
