Major Reitmann was a member of the 344th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On December 1, 1965, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a mission to destroy a railroad bridge in Lang Son Province, North Vietnam about 45 nautical miles northeast of Hanoi. He encountered heavy anti-aircraft fire and his aircraft received a direct hit and crashed. He was declared Missing in Action. His remains were recovered in 1988 and identified on May 2, 2011. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
