Lieutenant Purdy was a veteran of World War II. During the Korean War, he was a pilot of a single engine torpedo bomber at Brown Field, San Diego, California. On December 17, 1952, while practicing landing on simulated Naval aircraft carriers, he crashed on the runway and was killed.
