Captain Poynor was a member of the 523rd Tactical Fighter Squadron, Udorn Airfield, Thailand. On December 19, 1971, he was the bombardier/navigator of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on a mission over the Plain of Jars about 5 miles north of Ban Na Mai, Laos, when his aircraft was hit by hostile fire and crashed. His remains were recovered on June 3, 1994 and identified on June 12, 1995. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
