Aviation Electronics Radio Technician, Third Class Plants was a member of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 13, Carrier Air Wing 2 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS MIDWAY (CVA-41). On June 2, 1965, he was a crew member of a Douglas Skyraider Electronic Surveillance Aircraft (EA-1F) on a search and rescue mission over North Vietnam while circling the downed pilot in the South China Sea, the aircraft was hit by enemy fire and crashed near Sam Son, Nghe An Province. His remains were recovered on March 6, 1991 and identified on April 29, 1991. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
