Private First Class Pierce was a member of Troop G, 2nd Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. On June 10, 1970, he was in a defensive position in Mondol Kiri Province, Cambodia 20 miles west-southwest of Chbar. In returning to his defensive position, Private First Class Pierce had to cross a stream. He was caught in the current and drowned. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
