Lieutenant Peterson was a member of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 2, Carrier Anti-Submarine Group 57 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS HORNET (CVS-12). On July 19, 1967, he was the pilot of a Lockheed Viking Anti-Submarine Helicopter (SH-3A) attempting to rescue a downed pilot near Phu Ly, Nam Ha Province, North Vietnam when his aircraft was hit by enemy fire and crashed. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. LT Peterson's remains have been recovered and identified.
