Commissaryman First Class Patton was a member of Command Naval Support Activity 18 at Saigon, South Vietnam. On July 27, 1968, he was returning at night to his boat anchored in the upper My Tho River near Cho Lach District Town, South Vietnam, when he accidentally fell overboard and drowned. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
