For his leadership and valor, Lieutenant Commander Oxley was awarded the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

USNA Class of 1943, Lieutenant Commander Oxley was the pilot of a F2H-2 Banshee fighter with Fighter Squadron 172 aboard the carrier USS ESSEX (CV-9). On October 16, 1951, while on an armed reconnaissance flight, his aircraft was struck by anti-aircraft fire near Majon-ni, North Korea, crashed and exploded upon impact. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
