For his leadership and valor, Major Owens was awarded the Silver star, the Purple Heart with Gold Star, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Notes
Major Owens was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a member of Headquarters and Service Company, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. On October 4, 1952, he was an observer in a L-19A Bird Dog observation aircraft making a reconnaissance behind enemy lines, when his aircraft was forced down by enemy anti-aircraft fire. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on October 16, 1953. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
